The Banghoek Valley contains numerous hidden gems that many travellers overlook while driving down the Helshoogte road toward Franschhoek. A right turn past the protea farms leads down winding roads that descend into a landscape that feels like another era entirely.

Ancient trees, narrow paths, and quaint structures create an atmosphere steeped in history. The valley’s amphitheatre-like setting provides a dramatic backdrop, and as you approach the tasting room, the terroir reveals itself: vineyards planted at some of Stellenbosch’s highest elevations, between 350m and 540m above sea level.

Why Altitude Matters

This elevation is not incidental. It allows cool air circulation during hot summers and enables extended hang times — the slower ripening that produces complex flavour development. The valley’s character manifests in wines that are dark, rich, full-bodied, intense, and lingering with great acidity.

The Estate

Founded in 1978, Rainbows End has earned recognition for consistently exceptional wines. Winemaker Anton Malan adapts technique to each vintage: “We treat each vintage year differently. We adapt winemaking techniques each year to get the best result.”

His meticulous process includes light skin pressing in basket presses post-fermentation, malolactic fermentation in barrels, and ageing in French oak for a minimum of twelve months. The deep red oakleaf soils support premium red varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Shiraz, and Petit Verdot.

Rainbows End wines consistently achieve scores above 91 points. For a valley that many visitors bypass on their way to more familiar names, that’s a remarkable record.

It’s the kind of place that rewards those willing to take the less obvious turn.
