The Experience

Estate to estate,
over the mountain

Start with coffee at Lanzerac. Cross the Stellenbosch Mountain on foot — through fynbos, past vineyard blocks, into the Eden Forest. Finish with a long lunch at Vriesenhof. Seven kilometres. The best view in the Winelands. A story you'll tell for years.

  1. 01

7 km guided trail through fynbos, forest, and vineyard

The route crosses the Stellenbosch Mountain from Lanzerac through Coetzenburg, the Eden Forest, and down through working vineyard blocks to Vriesenhof.

  2. 02

Start at Lanzerac, finish with lunch at Vriesenhof

Two of Stellenbosch's most storied estates, connected by 250 metres of mountain. Lunch is included — wine tasting at the end is optional.

  3. 03

Expert guide commentary on flora, geology, and terroir

Marinus knows this mountain well — the fynbos species, the soil types, the way the slopes shape the wines grown on them. The trail is as educational as it is beautiful.

  4. 04

All fitness levels welcome — route adapts to your group

A moderate hike with about 250 m of elevation gain. Easier variants are available. If you can walk for a few hours, you can do this.

The Route

Your day on the mountain

Pick-up times and route variants can flex to suit your group — this is a guide, not a contract.

08:30

Meet at Lanzerac Estate

Coffee, a quick briefing, and an introduction to the mountain you're about to cross. Pick-up from Cape Town or Franschhoek available from 07:30.

09:00

Up into the fynbos

The trail climbs through working vineyard blocks and into indigenous fynbos — proteas, ericas, restios. The views over the valley open quickly and don't stop.

10:30

The Eden Forest

A descent through ancient indigenous woodland — rock-stepped paths, dappled light, the sound of a stream. One of the great secret places in the Winelands.

12:00

Down through the vineyards

The trail drops toward the valley floor with the Helderberg ahead and vines on both sides. The geology changes under your feet. Marinus will tell you why it matters.

13:00

Lunch at Vriesenhof

A long, well-earned lunch at the historic Vriesenhof Estate. Wine tasting is available as an add-on — just let us know when you book.

14:00

Transfer back

Return transfer to Lanzerac or your accommodation. You've earned the rest of the afternoon.

Frequently
asked questions

More questions? WhatsApp Marinus →

How fit do I need to be? +

Moderate fitness is ideal. The trail is 7 km with roughly 250 m of elevation gain — comparable to a long walk with some hills. Easier route variants are available if needed. If you can walk for a few hours comfortably, you can do this.

What should I bring? +

Closed hiking shoes are essential — not trainers, not sandals. Bring layers (the mountain can be cool even on warm days), sunscreen, a hat, and a 1-litre water bottle. We supply snacks and refreshments en route.

Is wine tasting included? +

Lunch at Vriesenhof is included in the price. Wine tasting at the end is an optional add-on — just let us know when you book and we'll arrange it.

Can you pick us up? +

Yes. We offer pick-up from most accommodation in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Cape Town. From Cape Town, pickup is typically 07:30 AM to reach the 08:30 start at Lanzerac.

How many people can join? +

The hike is private and works for groups of 2–12. Larger groups can be accommodated — just ask.

What if the weather is bad? +

We run in all but the most severe conditions. We'll contact you the evening before to confirm and can reschedule at no charge if the mountain isn't safe.
