Discover the Stellenbosch Mountain Hike Experience
Stellenbosch Mountain offers trails through indigenous fynbos, ancient rock formations, and views that put the wine region in a completely different perspective.

There’s something clarifying about seeing the Winelands from above. The valley floor, the vineyard rows, the estates — all of it makes a different kind of sense when you’ve walked up through the fynbos to look down at it.
Stellenbosch Mountain is part of the Cape Fold Belt, and the trails that cross it range from accessible walks to more demanding routes. What they share is extraordinary scenery and the particular pleasure of indigenous vegetation — the fynbos that makes this corner of the world one of the planet’s great biodiversity hotspots.
What to Expect
Trails traverse indigenous fynbos, ancient rock formations, and open ridgelines. Wildlife includes dassies (rock hyraxes) and a wide variety of birds. The Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, just outside Stellenbosch, offers well-maintained trails and a dramatic mountain setting.
The hike we run as part of our Estate to Estate experience starts at Lanzerac and finishes at Vriesenhof — a 7km route through the heart of the mountain, with commentary on the geology, flora, and wine heritage along the way.
Preparation
- Wear sturdy shoes suitable for uneven terrain.
- Bring a hat, sunscreen, and enough water.
- Check the weather before you go — conditions on the mountain change quickly.
- Start early in summer to avoid the midday heat.
After the Hike
The pairing of a mountain walk and a wine tasting is one of the more civilised combinations the Winelands has to offer. After a few hours on the trail, a glass of something cool on a shaded terrace is extraordinarily welcome.
